Plastic Surgery is one of the medical specialties that have a strong social impact both on the individual and the entire human community. Lately we have assisted to an obvious increase of the general interest towards the performances that this field of surgery offers. The phenomenon is perfectly justified by the specifics of the modern age that we are living in, when there is a real "frenzy of information", and when the entire existence of the individual equally relies on the art of communication and on the quality of one's own image. The individual's appearance and physical aspect, the harmony of the body and the beauty of the face are human traits that have been commented, described, painted or even sung of since the oldest of ages in numerous documents from all domains. Should we follow, for example, only the evolution of the human face, we might unmistakeably go through the entire history of humanity. And yet, only the last 50 years have given us scientific studies over the psychosocial impact of the individual's physical aspect. Such studies have tried to find answers to questions like: How can we preserve our beauty? How do we prolong our youth? How do the others see us? Why do we have to be beautiful? When, where and how must we work on the physical appearance?, or What are our priorities? There are yet many questions on the same topic, to which at least one, just as important, should be added: How do we choose our doctor and what do we expect from them? Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery is the field that reconciles, at the highest level possible, the two inseparable features of medicine: that of being a science and an art at the same time. By virtue of such dualism, the practise of Plastic Surgery will stimulate to the maximum the specialist's creative capacity and imagination in his or her attempt to get the best result, to the patient's moral satisfaction.
